Per the Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, derived from a putative stem *maťer- of Proto-Slavic *mati. Otherwise, a variant of Proto-Slavic *materъka - again a derivation from a case form of *mati. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr.
