Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ostrica*ostrika. Equivalent to о́стър (óstǎr, sharp) +‎ -ица (-ica).

Borrowed from Russian остри́ца (ostríca, pinworm), probably a calque of the scientific name for the family Oxyuridae. Morphologically equivalent to Etymology 1.
