From соп (sop, mound (dialectal)) +‎ -ка (-ka), from Proto-Slavic *sъpъ, related to сы́пать (sýpatʹ, to pour, to strew). Per Vasmer, meaning "volcano" presumably influenced by сопе́ть (sopétʹ, to wheeze); Czech sopka (volcano), Slovak sopka (volcano) are borrowings from Russian.
