Etymology edit
From Old Church Slavonic стадии (stadii, “stade”), borrowed from Byzantine Greek στάδιος (stádios, “measure of length”), a substantivation of Ancient Greek στάδιος (stádios, “firm, fixed”). Cognate with Latin stadium whence the recent doublet стадио́н (stadión) and stadium.
