Etymology edit

Inherited from Old East Slavic сѣчень (sěčenĭ), from Proto-Slavic *sěčьnь (January, February), lit. "the month of tree cutting", from Proto-Slavic *sěťi (to cut), from Proto-Indo-European *sek- (to cut). Cognates include Polish styczeń (January), Serbo-Croatian siječanj (January), and Macedonian сечко (sečko, February).
