Inherited from Proto-Slavic *tьmьněti. By surface analysis, те́мний (témnyj, dark) +‎ -іти (-ity). Compare Russian темне́ть (temnétʹ), Belarusian цямне́ць (cjamnjécʹ), Polish ciemnieć.
