Etymology
editInherited from Classical Mongolian ᠲᠩᠷᠢ (tngri /teŋ[gä]ri/), from Middle Mongol ᠲᠩᠷᠢ (tngri /teŋ[gä]ri/, orthographically borrowed from Old Uyghur 𐾀𐽺𐽷𐽾𐽶 (tnkry)), from Proto-Mongolic *teŋgeri, from Proto-Turkic *teŋri.
Cognate with Buryat тэнгэри (tengeri, “sky, heaven; God”), Kalmyk теңгр (teñgr, “sky, heaven; weather”), etc. Compare also Tuvan дээр (deer, “sky”), Khakas тигір (tigìr, “sky”), Yakut таҥара (tañara, “God”), Southern Altai теҥери (teŋeri), Old Turkic 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃 (t²ŋr²i /teŋri/, “sky”), etc.
