Etymology
editInherited from Old East Slavic аскъ (askŭ) or ꙗскъ (jaskŭ), from Old Norse askr (“wooden vessel”) or eski (“ashen box”). See *askaz for cognates.
In the sense of “secret facility”, from the Soviet Union-era rule of keeping the names of such facilities a secret by addressing mail to a post office box number without a name.
For the semantic shift from "tree" to "container" compare Latin buxus, buxis (whence English box, boxwood).
