- From Proto-Mongolic *ündüsün, compare Buryat үндэһэн (ündehen), Kalmyk үндсн (ündsn), Dongxiang undusun.
- Perhaps related somehow to Proto-Tungusic *ŋuiŋte (Evenki ӈиӈтэ (ŋiŋtə)) or Karakhanid [script needed] (öŋdī, “traditional customs”).
