Etymology edit

Usually explained as a native formation արդ (ard, structure, form, arrangement) +‎ -ար (-ar); the sense of “material regularity, structuredness” developed here into “moral regularity, uprightness”.[1][2][3][4] But Iranian etymologies have also been proposed.[5][6] Note also Old Georgian მართალი (martali).
