The root is *գիտ- (*git-), from Proto-Indo-European *weyd-, +‎ -ան- (-an-). See also եգիտ (egit).

  1. (transitive) to find, to invent, to discover, to find out
  2. (transitive) to gain, to have
    գտանել շնորհս առաջի ուրուքgtanel šnorhs aṙaǰi urukʻto gain or acquire the heart, friendship, goodwill of some one; to regain the favour of some one
  3. (transitive) to meet
  4. (mediopassive, intransitive) to find oneself; to appear, to show oneself
    գտանիմ հաւատարիմgtanim hawatarimto be faithful
