Etymology edit

According to Ačaṙyan, perhaps a “Caucasian” borrowing (Georgian-Zan? Northeast Caucasian?); compare Georgian ხაზი (xazi, line, row), Laz ხაზ (xaz, to draw a line), Bats ხაზ (xaz), Udi խազ (xaz, line).

Alternatively, according to Martirosyan, perhaps an Iranian borrowing, ultimately going back to Proto-Iranian *xad-s-, sigmatic aorist of *xad- (to beat, inflict a wound); compare Manichaean Parthian xʾz- (*xāz-, to devour), Sanskrit खिदति (khinati, to tear; to press down).
