Etymology

edit

Suffixed with +‎ -ան- (-an-) from the root կիծ- (kic-), which is usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *geyd- (to stick, jab, tickle) with Proto-Germanic *kitilōną (to tickle) as a cognate.[1][2][3] In view of formal problems (an unexpected -ծ- (-c-) and a root structure with two voiced unaspirated stops), as well as the absence of cognates outside Armenian and Germanic, this etymology is doubtful.[4] More likely we are dealing with an onomatopoeic formation: compare Albanian kic (to bite lightly).

See also Old Armenian կէտ (kēt), Middle Armenian կէտ (kēt, kind of biting fly), Armenian կիճ (kič), ճիճ (čič).
