Etymology edit

Literally “caught by the hand”, from *ձերբ (*jerb, an old instrumental of ձեռն (jeṙn)) +‎ -ա- (-a-) +‎ կալում (kalum). The whole formation is a calque of Middle Persian dstglwb' (*dast-graw, captivity, literally caught by the hand).
