From մած-ան-իմ (mac-an-im, to curdle, coagulate) +‎ -ուն (-un).[1][2][3] Typologically compare Persian ماست (mâst, coagulated milk, yoghurt) from ماسیدن (mâsidan, to coagulate), Turkish yoğurt from yoğurmak (to plasticize, knead).
