Etymology

edit

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan tentatively suggests a derivation from յ- (y-) +‎ Proto-Indo-European *pi-pleh₁-, reduplication of *pleh₁-, +‎ -ան- (-an-). Compare Sanskrit पिपर्ति (piparti), Ancient Greek πίμπλημι (pímplēmi).
