Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁ōd-, from *h₁ed-. The verb is suppletive: part of the conjugation is filled by կեր- (ker-), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃-, whence also կեր (ker). Compare Albanian ha.

  2. (figuratively) to run through, to squander, to eat up, to waste, to consume
    եկեր զամենայն կեանս իւրeker zamenayn keans iwrhe lavished or squandered away all his fortune
  3. to eat away or up, to corrode; to fret; to consume, to devour
