From Middle Persian [script needed] (pwštykpʾn' /⁠puštībān⁠/, supporter, bodyguard).[1][2] Compare Persian پشتیبان (poštibân, prop; whatever is leant upon, trusted to). For the constituents see Proto-Iranian *pr̥štáh and -պան (-pan). Doublet of պաշտպան (paštpan).
