Etymology

edit

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) Possibly derived from Middle High German bange (anxious) or the noun benge (anxiety), which are related with Middle High German enge (narrow), whence Yiddish ענג (eng). The sense “to yearn” is attested for the equivalent German bangen (usually “to be anxious”). Compare also German beengen (to cramp, to corset).
