editEtymology 2
editSee ליאַפּען (lyapen, “to smack; botch; smear”), further origin uncertain. Possibly a partial calque of Russian вля́паться (vljápatʹsja, “to plunge into something dirty; to get into trouble”). Compare Russian ля́пать (ljápatʹ, “to blurt out; whack, hit; throw together hastily”) and ляп (ljap, “blunder, error”). For possibly similar semantic developments see English smitten (“in love”, literally “to have been struck with a firm blow”), love-struck.
