From Middle High German zibolle, zebülle, zwibolle, from Old High German zwibollo, from Late Latin cēpulla, diminutive of Latin cēpa. Compare German Zwiebel. Cognate to Polish cebula, Ukrainian цибу́ля (cybúlja). Unrelated to the diminutive suffix ־עלע (-ele).
