Etymology

Of the root ء ي س (ʔ-y-s), from يَئِسَ (yaʔisa) by metathesis.

Verb

أَيِسَ • (ʔayisa) I, non-past يَأْيَسُ‎ (yaʔyasu)

1. to give up hope, to despair

   Synonyms: يَئِسَ (yaʔisa), قَنِطَ (qaniṭa)
