Etymology

edit

Due to the pattern occurring in Classical Arabic only in Aramaic borrowings, for instance شَاقُول (šāqūl), كَابُوس (kābūs), كَابُول (kābūl), كَالُون (kālūn), and particularly كَافُور (kāfūr), it presupposes, as Fraenkel already explicitly noted, *ܓܳܡܽܘܪܳܐ (*gāmūrā, gāmōrā) and ܓܽܘܡܳܪܳܐ (gummārā) of similar sense, but this is not attested. By conjecture only, it is possible to relate the senses within the Arabic and Aramaic root of “heating up” coals back to more general senses of “completion, fulfilment”, which further explains the background of the term جُمَّار (jummār, pith of palm), a palm attaining maturity, perhaps by man letting it grow.
