From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwʾlbʾl /⁠xwārbār⁠/, “food and drink”), a compound of [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwʾl /⁠xwār⁠/, “food”) +‎ [Book Pahlavi needed] (bʾl /⁠bār⁠/, “fruit”); compare Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫟𐫇𐫀𐫡 𐫀𐫇𐫅 𐫁𐫀𐫡 (xwʾr ʾwd bʾr /⁠xwār ud bār⁠/, “food of all kinds”). Akin to Old Armenian խորբար (xorbar), Old Georgian ხუარბალი (xuarbali), Georgian ხორბალი (xorbali), Iranian borrowings.
