From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾspnc /aspinǰ/, hospitality; inn). Cognate with Parthian 𐫙𐫘𐫛𐫏𐫗𐫋(ʿspynj, hostel, place to stay) and akin to Old Armenian ասպ(ա)նջական (asp(a)nǰakan, hospitable; host), Classical Syriac ܐܫܦܙܟܢܐ(ʾšpzknʾ, majordomo; host), ܐܫܦܙܐ(ʾšpzʾ, lodging), Georgian მასპინძელი (masṗinʒeli, host), Iranian borrowings.
