Inherited from Proto-Iranian *gžárati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gžʰárati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰéreti (to flow, to melt). Cognate with Avestan 𐬖𐬲𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (γžaraiti), Ancient Greek φθείρω (phtheírō) and Sanskrit क्षरति (kṣarati, to flow, stream, trickle).
