Etymology edit

From a merger in Levantine dialects of Galilean Aramaic שְׁטֵף (šṭēp̄, to wash) and Classical Syriac ܫܛܰܦ (šṭap̄, to split). Doublet of شَطَبَ (šaṭaba).
