Punjabi edit

Etymology edit

Related to پِھرنا (phirnā, to roam), likely a descendant from tonal pronunciation. Compare Hindustani پِھر (phir) / फिर (phir).

Pronunciation edit

Adverb edit

فیْر (fer) (Gurmukhi spelling ਫ਼ੇਰ or ਫਿਰ)

  1. then, afterwards, so
    فیْر کی ہویا؟
    fer kī hoeyā?
    Then what happened?
  2. again, once again
    فیْر کَرfer karDo it again

Usage notes edit

In Western Punjabi, the lemma is written with ف (f) and exactly how it is pronounced, whereas in Eastern Punjabi (in the Gurmukhi script), the dominant spelling is ਫਿਰ (phir), likely a word with tonal pronunciation, hence the pronunciation may vary per dialect. Though the f sound is considered foreign in Punjabi, and most other South Asian languages, here the sound is natively deriven.
