Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (nzdyk' /⁠nazdīk⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *názdyah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *názdyas. One of a few adjectives that has preserved the final -g/k phoneme and did not undergo the regular sound change from Middle Persian to Modern Persian. Others include تاریک (târik, dark) and باریک (bârik, slender).
