Etymology

Borrowed from Punjabi کھٹّا (khaṭṭā, “yellow, sour”), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀔𑀝𑁆𑀝 (khaṭṭa), from Sanskrit खट्ट (khaṭṭa).

The expected outcome from direct inheritance is کھاٹا (khāṭā), so the lack of vowel lengthening before a geminate consonant means that the word was probably borrowed from Punjabi.
