Etymology

edit

Contains گند (gand, stink, stench, bad smell, fetid smell) as the first element, as also گندنا (gandanâ, leek). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)

Related to Judeo-Tat kongoluş, Talysh qandalaş (elder).

For the development of the sense "elder" note that elder has a bad smell. Its berries are used to make a dye.
