Of unknown origin. McGregor tentatively postulates a combination of कान (kān, ear) +‎ चूसना (cūsnā, to suck), lit. "ear-sucked"; compare मक्खीचूस (makkhīcūs, miser, literally fly-sucker) for a similar formation.
