Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑁄𑀇 m sg (koi, someone, something, nominative). See there for more. Cognate to Awadhi कोई (koī), Braj कोऊ (koū), Punjabi ਕੋਈ (koī), Gujarati કોઈ (koī), Marathi कुणी (kuṇī), Bengali কেউ (keu), Bhojpuri केऊ (kēū), Assamese কেও (keü), Sinhalese කොයි (koyi).

Originally the masculine nominative singular form of a paradigm whose neuter form became कुछ (kuch) and genitive form became किसी (kisī). See 𑀓𑀺𑀁𑀘𑀺 (kiṃci) and 𑀓𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀇 (kassaï) for more.
