From Proto-Indo-Iranian *pr̥tHwíH, from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥th₂-éwih₂ (broad land, country), from *pléth₂us (flat, broad). Cognate with Avestan 𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬚𐬡𐬍 (pərəθβī), Proto-Celtic *ɸlitawī. Related to पृथु (pṛthú).

      yásya vratá óṣadhīrviśvárūpā: sá na: parjanya máhi śárma yaccha.
      Do you, Parjanya, through whose function the earth is bowed down; through whose function hoofed cattle thrive; through whose function plants assume all kinds of forms, grant us great felicity.
