From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰáyatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáyatay, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéyh₂-tor, from *bʰeyh₂- (to fear, be afraid). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬫𐬈𐬥𐬙𐬈 (bayente, they are afraid), Old English bifian (to tremble), Old Church Slavonic боꙗти сѧ (bojati sę), Lithuanian bijóti (to be afraid).
