Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘕 (māja), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀚𑁆𑀚 (majja), from Sanskrit मद्य (mádya). Cognate with Hindi माँजा (māñjā). Doublet of मद्य (madya).
