From Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-gʷelbʰ- (same womb), from *gʷelbʰ- (womb), equivalent to (sa, copulative prefix) +‎ गर्भ (garbha, child, offspring; womb). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀδελφός (adelphós, brother).
