Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀧𑁆𑀧 (sappa) undergoing compensatory lengthening and nasalization, from Sanskrit सर्प (sarpá). Doublet of सर्प (sarp), a tatsama. Cognate with Marathi साप (sāp).
