From Proto-Indo-European *sterh₃- (to spread, stretch, extend), an extension of *ster- (spread). Cognate with Ancient Greek στόρνῡμι (stórnūmi, spread), Latin sternō (spread), Proto-Slavic *stornà (side, land), *stérti (to extend); English strew.
