editInherited from Prakrit 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀺𑀲𑀸𑀮 (hatthisāla) (compare Pali hatthisāla), from Sanskrit हस्तिशाला (hastiśālā),[1] from हस्तिन् (hastin, “elephant”) + शाला (śālā, “house, shed, stable”). By surface analysis, हथ- (hath-, “elephant”) + सार (sār, “cowhouse; animal pen”). Doublet of हस्तिशाला (hastiśālā).
