Inherited from Prakrit 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀺𑀲𑀸𑀮 (hatthisāla) (compare Pali hatthisāla), from Sanskrit हस्तिशाला (hastiśālā),[1] from हस्तिन् (hastin, elephant) +‎ शाला (śālā, house, shed, stable). By surface analysis, हथ- (hath-, elephant) +‎ सार (sār, cowhouse; animal pen). Doublet of हस्तिशाला (hastiśālā).
