editInherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀆𑀫𑀁 (āmaṃ), from Sanskrit आम् (ām), probably a variant of the sacred syllable ॐ (oṃ). The initial h- is emphatic, from Sanskrit हि (hi), ह (ha), or related to होना (honā). Doublet of ॐ (om).
