Borrowed from Classical Persian خدا (xudā), from earlier خدای (xudāy) from Middle Persian [script needed] (hwtʾy /xwadāy/), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *hwatā́wā (literally “self-strong”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠈꠖꠣ (xóda), Assamese খোদা (khüda), Hindi ख़ुदा (xudā), Punjabi ਖੁਦਾ (khudā), Burmese ခိုဒါ (hkuida).
