Inherited from Early Assamese গাঙ্গ (gaṅgo), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀕𑀁𑀕𑀸 (gaṃgā), from Sanskrit গঙ্গা (gaṅgā, “the Ganges”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠉꠣꠋ (gaṅ), Chakma 𑄉𑄧𑄋 (gaṅā), Bengali গাং (gaṅ).
