Etymology

edit

From the now rarer form গোলাব (gōlab) with final sound devoicing, borrowed from Classical Persian گلاب (gulāb, rosewater), with confusion of terminology in South Asian Persian ("rosewater" to "rose" for গোলাপ (gōlap), with "rosewater" subsequently being called গোলাপজল (gōlapjol) instead). Compare Hindustani گلاب / गुलाब (gulāb).
