Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀸𑀉𑀮 (cāula), from Sanskrit *चावल (cāvala), *चाबल (cābala), *चामल (cāmala), from the same non-Aryan substrate as তণ্ডুল (tonḍul). Cognate with Sylheti ꠌꠣꠃꠟ (saul), Rohingya soil, Assamese চাউল (saul), Odia ଚାଉଳ (cauḷô), Bihari चाउर (cāur), Gujarati ચાવળ (cāvaḷ), Nepali चाँवल (cā̃wal), Nepali चामल (cāmal), Hindustani चावल (cāval) / چاول (cāval), Punjabi ਚਾਵਲ (cāval), ਚੌਲ (caul), Sindhi چانور (cā̃uru), Persian چلو (čelow).[1]
