From a derivative of Sanskrit ধ্রোক্ষ্যতি (dhrokṣyati, will deceive), from the root দ্রুহ্ (druh), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrewgʰ-. Cognate with Hindi धोखा (dhokhā), Punjabi ਧੋਖਾ (dhokhā), Gujarati ધોકા (dhokā) / ધોંકા (dhõkā).
