Inherited from Middle Bengali বাঢ়া (baṛha), from Prakrit 𑀯𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀇 (vaḍḍhaï), from Sanskrit वर्धते (vardhate, to grow, increase, swell). Cognate with Sylheti ꠛꠣꠠꠣ (baṛa), Assamese বঢ়া (borha), Odia ବଢ଼ିବା (baṛhibā), Maithili बाँढ़ब (bā̃ṛhab), Bhojpuri बढ़ल (baṛhal), Gujarati વધવું (vadhvũ), Hindi बढ़ना (baṛhnā), Nepali बाढ़नु (bāṛhanu), Punjabi ਵੱਧਣਾ (vaddhaṇā), Sindhi وڌڻ (vadhaṇu), Marathi वाढणे (vāḍhṇe), Konkani वाड्ता (vāḍtā), Sinhalese වඩිනවා (waḍinawā).
