Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀩𑀟𑁆𑀟 (*baḍḍa), from earlier Prakrit 𑀯𑀟𑁆𑀟 (vaḍḍa, large, great), from Sanskrit वृद्ध (vṛddha, grown, augmented, aged). Doublet of বৃদ্ধ (briddho) and বুড়ো (buṛō), both of which refer to elderly people, and বড্ড (boḍḍo, large, great; very, much). Cognate with Hindi बड़ा (baṛā), Punjabi ਬੜਾ (baṛā) / ਵੱਡਾ (vaḍḍā), Marathi बडा (baḍā) / वडील (vaḍīl, father) Assamese বৰ (bor), Sinhalese වඩා (waḍā, more), Romani baro.
