From Sanskrit শৃঙ্গ (śṛṅga), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂- (horn). Cognate with Rohingya cíng, Sylheti ꠢꠤꠋ (hiṅ), Hindi सींग (sīṅg).
