Learned borrowing from Sanskrit सत्य (satya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsatyás (“true”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁sn̥t-yós, from *h₁es- (“to be”). Doublet of সাঁচা (śãca), সৎ (śot, “honest”), সত্ত্ব (śotto, “presence, essence, instinct”), সত্তা (śotta, “entity, existence”), and অস্তিত্ব (ostitto, “existence, life”).
