Learned borrowing from Sanskrit सत्य (satya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsatyás (true), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁sn̥t-yós, from *h₁es- (to be). Doublet of সাঁচা (śãca), সৎ (śot, honest), সত্ত্ব (śotto, presence, essence, instinct), সত্তা (śotta, entity, existence), and অস্তিত্ব (ostitto, existence, life).
